Ruffed Grouse

Ruffed Grouse

Ruffed grouse near Beech Gap, Blue Ridge Parkway

This is the best of four out-of-focus photos I got of a ruffed grouse that was standing in the middle of the northbound lane of the Blue Ridge Parkway this afternoon. He strolled into the underbrush as I was readying my camera and jumped up on a tree stump to pose for a photo, but I wasn’t quick enough to get a good shot.

Good for you to capture him at all! I’ve often heard them, especially at this time of year, but a sighting is rare.

That explains the two ecstatic birdwatchers who came swarming out of their car, just after I took this photo, with their notebooks and binoculars whispering “Did you see where he went?”

Thanks, Anna! I was so surpirsed to see him in the road. There was a lot of traffic on the Parkway because it’s a holiday here.
